Triominoes is the classic triangular domino game, combining strategy and luck.

Players begin by drawing several tiles, keeping the numbered sides hidden from their opponents. As each piece is played, points are awarded. New pieces must match the numbers on one of the existing pieces. If you don't have a matching tile, draw from the stock until you get a match. There are penalty points for each tile drawn, but points are awarded when you finally make a match. Certain matches, such as closing a hexagon or building a bridge, earn players bonus points.

Basic Rules:

The game uses a set of 56 triangular dominoes, with numbers ranging from 0 to 5 at each corner.  Tiles are shuffled (face down).  Players then draw tiles, depending on how many are playing:
  • 2 players draw 9 tiles each
  • 3 or 4 players draw 7 tiles each
  • 5 or 6 players draw 6 tiles each
The remainder of the tiles make up the "well", and are held in reserve to be drawn upon at need.

The player with the highest triple (all three corners the same value) places the first tile. The player receives the total number of points on the tile, plus a bonus of 10. If the first tile happens to be a 0-0-0, the value of the tile is 30 points, plus a bonus of 10, for a total of 40 points. If no one hold a triple, then the tile with the largest point total leads. If the tile is not a triple, then no bonus is awarded.

Play proceeds to the left (clockwise). Each player adds a tile to an open edge of the layout, if they can. To add a tile, a player must match two numbers to one edge of an existing tile.

Drawing Tiles:

If a player is unable or unwilling to make a move, he or she must draw tiles from the well until he can make a move. If there are no tiles left, then the player must pass.
Each tile drawn from the well looses the player 5 points.  A maximum of 3 tiles can be drawn from the well before the player must either place a tile or pass.
If a player passes, an additional 10 points is deducted from their score resulting in a total deduction of 25 points (5 + 5 + 5 + 10 = 25).

Ending A Hand:

A hand ends either when a player plays all his tiles, or when a game is blocked. A game is blocked when no player is able to add another tile to the layout.

Scoring:

Players score points equal to the sum of the numbers on the tile they place on the playing area.
Bonus points are awarded for placing the first tile on the playing area and for completeing various shapes:
Hexagon - When an hexagon shape is made, the player who finished it receives the points on his tile, plus a 50-point bonus.

Bridge - When a tile is added that bridges two parts of a layout, matching one side of a tile and the point of a tile opposite it, the player scored the points on his tile, plus a 40-point bonus.
 
 
The first player to play their last tile is entitled to add to their score the sum of all the points remaining on his or her opponents tiles (after the round is completed).  Should more than one player play their last tile in the same round, only the first player to play their last piece is entitled to the bonus score.

Tournament Rules:

  • Players will be assigned to different groups with up to 6 players per group.
  • Each group will play a cut-down version of the game (first person to reach 200 points wins) until a winner is produced.
  • The winner of each group will proceed to the next round until there are a maximum of 6 players left.
  • The final game between the 6 (or fewer) winners will play a traditional game with the winner being the first person to reach a score of 400 points.
  • Any player receiving assistance or information from anyone else (except a judge - who can only advise on the rules of the game) will immediately be disqualified and play will proceed without him or her.
  • The judges' decisions are final.
  • No correspondence will be entered into.
